John C. Lennox M.A., PhD., DPhil., DSC se narodil v Armagh (Severní Irsko) v rodině vedoucího obchodního domu. Jeho rodiče ho odmala vedli ke křesťanské víře. Když se na univerzitě v Cambridge dostal do akademického prostředí, kde se mimo jiné zúčastnil také jedné z posledních přednášek teologa C. S. Lewise, musel svou víru vystavit kritice ostatních akademiků a sám ji také přezkoumat. Zjistil, že čím více ji vystavuje kritice, tím silněji je přesvědčen, že pro víru v Boha existují důkazy a racionální argumenty.

Strávil téměř třicet let jako profesor matematiky na univerzitě v Cardiffu, učil i na univerzitě ve Würzburgu, Freiburgu a Vídni.

Poté co hnutí Nových ateistů (zvláště po 11. září) začalo kritizovat vliv náboženství na člověka a historii, vystoupil John Lennox jako mluvčí a obhájce křesťanství. Debaty s předními ateisty, jako například Richardem Dawkinsem nebo Christopherem Hitchensem byly vysoce sledované a vedly k vydání jeho argumentace v knižní podobě (God’s Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? (2009), Gunning for God (2011), and Seven Days that Divide the World (2011)). Jeho oponentem na dálku je také Stephen Hawking, na jehož publikaci The Grand Design (2011) Lennox odpověděl svou knihou God and Stephen Hawking (2011).

Lennoxe bychom mohli zařadit mezi křesťanské apologety, jako byl C. S. Lewis (předchůdce) nebo Lee Strobel (současník). Zabývá se jak pozitivní, tak negativní apologetikou.

V současnosti je profesorem matematiky a filozofie na univerzitě v Oxfordu a pastorační poradce na Green Templeton College v Oxfordu.
